My passion for mental health grew from my own experience of poor mental health services; along with seeing people I loved and cared about being mistreated within the same system. I knew something needed to change. This was when I made a promise to my partner - who at the time was receiving treatment within a mental health hospital - that promise was that "I'm going to change the world."
Me & Mental Health is a project committed to supporting Children and Young People who struggle with their mental health to access alternative support methods to benefit their treatment and their overall life. Throughout this project, I will aim to work with Children and Young People that are currently accessing the services within a mental health hospital (this is also know as 'tier 4 service'), I've chosen to work within these environments due to the need that I identified which was the lack of comfort, hopefully by the end of this piece of work I will be able to demonstrate that when service users are comfortable when in hospital they recover quicker and return back to hospital less.
This project has been born from my passion for shaping the current mental health system - with a specific focus on Children and Young People's mental health. By the end of this project I hope to have proven that the mental health system can be and do better for everyone accessing it, along with this I hope this project will unleash a new wave of theories and treatment methods that will no longer be seen as alternative and instead they will be deployed throughout life as both a preventative, and treatment method. There isn't a service like this in the entire country.
Picture this, someone has been sectioned under the mental health act meaning they have to go to hospital whether they want to or not. How might this person be feeling? Often I found that when people we forced to go to hospital they felt out of control, they weren't able to make their own decisions. I believe it is extremely important that people are able to make decisions about what happens in their life. When appropriate and safe the beneficiaries I work with will make all of the decisions - from deciding whether they want to attend their session to how they want to engage. Giving autonomy back to the people I engage with will ensure they feel in control and empowered.
